My favorite mark of tea has got to be. The flavors are somewhat unique (like my favorite. Green Tea Pomegranate) but I must acknowledge that what I like most about the tea aer the inspirational sayings on the tea bag tag. This was the saying on the bag I am drinking now... Maybe this pass this week will be what I be to mouth me into a creative streak? I can wish. And bear witness. But I found it funny that I received this message from the tea. "Restaurants with good tea service" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 01:38:06

Since serious tea drinkers are a neglected minority. I thought it might be helpful to compile a enumerate of full-service restaurants (not tea shops or places that otherwise specialize in drinks) that undergo good tea service. And no. I don't convey bagged tea no matter how conceive of either the tea or the presentation box. I convey let go tea. Of cover virtually all Chinese restaurants serve let go tea so I'm also excluding the basic Chinese restaurant but if you know of one that offers a good selection of teas that would be worth a mention. Town Hall (a choice of loose teas served in iron pots)Absinthe (I don't remember the pots but they offered a selection of let go teas)Lalime's (served in those glass pots with the plunger) Funny you should mention--I was despairing this morning because most of the brunch places in my neighborhood serve bagged tea a lot of which is Mighty Leaf (way too perfumey for my taste). Modern Tea in Hayes Valley specializes in loose leaf teas and has a beat menu. I like the waffles for brunch. I agree with pane's Modern Tea recommendation. Solid food. Their buttermilk cake (or was it pudding?) with a pot of tea is a great dessert. Gets work with the pre-Opera/Symphony displace at dinner. I suspect though that Ruth was thinking of restaurants that happen to have good tea function not tea rooms that serve food. Personally I would love a tea house specializing in Chinese teas with complementary (not necessarily complimentary) food something like Imperial Tea but less precious and less formal. Chatea the Taiwanese chain comes to mind. Despite its label. Modern Tea is primarily a restaurant. Tea may be their inspiration but their food is not precious or tea room like. Oh and you might analyse out the new tea room at Teance in Berkeley which has just opened on the weekends. They're serving snacks to complement their teas. I think the teas served at Slanted Door are loose peruse. I've enjoyed the pueh erh (when available) and the Hong Kong milk teas there. The waiters who served the teas seemed knowledgeable about steeping times and food (at least dessert) complements. Does anyone know of restaurants in the South Bay which have good tea function? Slanted Door has the best tea service of any restaurant I've been to in San Francisco. There's a good selection it is all let go peruse and the implements are top notch. Sadly as the OP noted good tea function in a restaurant is a rare thing. Good idea for a thread. Slanted Door as mentioned has a book tea selection as does Hong Kong Flower Lounge. change surface modest Arab restaurants often have good tea service. For example a pot of Tajine's Moroccan mint (just mint leaves and sugar no color or black tea as at other places) is served on a decorative tray with glasses. I undergo to admit though. I would prefer a restaurant that served a reliable pot of properly brewed tea (like at John Campbell's Irish Bakery) with no more than three choices versus the trendy offerings of many upscale spots. It's become an excuse to furnish 7 flowery options in odd pottery to change magnitude the dessert check rather than a thoughtful extension of the beverage choices. I have nothing against daub orange rooibos but when I'm in the mood for color tea. I don't usually want vanilla cornflower grapefruit amalgamate. At that point. I'd rather undergo a bag of Twining's Earl Grey in a mug for $1.50. Also too many tea markups are approaching wine by the furnish. A pot of tea shouldn't cost $7-9 unless it is something very rare and fresh. Genmaicha and jasmine pearls are both good with food but that's no excuse for overcharging. For those prices. I also expect servers who understand wet temperatures and steeping times being different for white teas than for oolongs. Small steps... Too adjust. However since I never drink caffeinated tea after dinner (I'm very caffiene sensitive -- any significant amount of caffeine after 5 pm keeps me up). I appreciate the various herbal offerings (I hate rooibos though -- I evaluate it tastes like dirt). I don't evaluate I will ever get over the shock of being offered Stash tea bags (in a fancy box) and one of those little china pots of "hot" water to immerse it in at Fleur de Lys. When the work at Town Hall overheard me telling that story to my table mates at our recent office luncheon she described that kind of tea function as "insulting" and I could only agree. Somehow. I don't think Fleur de Lys charged anything in the neighborhood of $1.50 for that ten-cent teabag! To be bring together that was several years ago and they may have upgraded their tea service since then. It's the attitude more than the actual tea I object to. Restaurants that wouldn't dream of serving cheap supermarket coffee are more than happy to charge you top dollar for cheap supermarket bagged tea. Thanks for bringing Modern Tea to my attention! Next time someone suggests dinner in that area. I'll try to convince them to analyse it out. Not surprisingly the beat tea offerings come from actual tea drinkers. Ritual recently upgraded its tea selections but no one there knows how to steep them. For a while my rule of thumb was that you had a better chance of getting a good cup of tea in an East Bay restaurant than a similar quality SF restaurant. But that may not be true any more if it ever was. Great topic! I usually have given up on tea service in the Bay area so it's good to know about the exceptions. Just this pass I was very pleasantly surprised with the tea service at Hayes Street Grill. It's a small but well chosen selection brewed alter. My order of Russian Caravan was the beat tea I've had in a local restaurant in quite a while! If I denote correctly. Sea Thai Bistro in Santa Rosa has a very nice selection of loose leaf teas on their menu (as come up as some more unusual drinks such as herbal infused "soda"). The food there is quite delicious. (: Being a tea lover myself. I too complain the fact that it is very difficult to find a restaurant with decent tea service. It doesn't make much sense either seeing as how tea seems to be growing in popularity and it seems easier to find high quality loose leaf tea these days.

"Tea-Poor" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:09:17

I'm just an average tea lover not a professional reviewer. The reviews on this site are merely my opinions on teas and teaware I've experienced first-hand for myself. Your mileage may (and probably will) differ. Yes though my cabinets are stocked with tea. I find myself somewhat "tea poor" today which is why no analyse. However. I undergo some blooming teas that haven't been reviewed yet and tea on order so Monday I'll regain my momentum. Until then. I just undergo to say - it's a sad thing when I wandered about the Las Vegas casinos for two days earlier this week and did not come across even one shop selling tea (bagged or loose) to buy. Sure there were a few coffee places that sold tea by the cup but no where to purchase tea to brew elsewhere. I honestly thought that surely in a larger city it would be fairly easy to find tea along the strip. I can't be the only tea-lover to tour Vegas! But no and unfortunately we didn't have the time or navigational knowledge to go hunting places off the well-beaten paths. Not that I evaluate anyone in Vegas probably reads this blog but if you are from Las Vegas and stumble across this somehow please consider opening a tea shop somewhere along or change state to the strip.. somewhere easy for tourists like myself to not only get a much-needed dose of teafreshment but also some good quality "souvenier" tea to carry approve domiciliate. If there is a tea shop I missed well... I desire it had been better advertised. It was one of many things that disappointed me about Vegas - the unavailability of good tea. I did use the in-room coffee pot and some Indian Nimbu bags I had brought but as we all know coffee pots do not make good tea and I gave up quickly. I really will buy an electric kettle just for traveling before I go anywhere again. More on Monday... I bequeath there being a wildly overpriced tea hold on in the Mandalay Bay shopping arcade on the Luxor side. It was near a men's shaving store if that helps. Hey Jamie,I stumbled across your communicate on the weekend and really enjoy it; it's border-line addictive. And your knowledge and insights on tea are definitely not 'add up'. I've added you to my blogroll at www herbalinfusions ca/communicate if you are interested in doing a link exchange let me know! Thanks Garrett - I'll try to bequeath that for next measure. Which will hopefully be a long time coming... Dan thanks for stopping by and such kind comments! I'll check out your site later on and see about linking it up here as well. Normally I'm much more reliable than I have been lately but I'm doing National Novel Writing Month at the moment and 50,000 words in 30 days can be quite stressful on other areas of life! It should go to normal fairly soon here though.. at least I hope it ordain!
