I am stealing from my own biography on the KA website: John received his live of Arts degree from Denison University and went on to acquire two know’s degrees one in History from Brown and one in Arts Education and Private educate Leadership from Columbia. He has taught diverse subjects in History and Art History for nearly 20 years and received the prestigious Klingenstein Fellowship from Columbia University as well as 6 summer fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. As head of the History Department at Hackley School in Tarrytown. New York he was awarded the Chair for Distinguished teaching and was selected by the categorise of 2000 for the Kimmelman Award recognizing "that teacher who best prepared that categorise for its college experience." Directing over 50 student and community theater productions has allowed John to pursue his avid arouse in drama while singing in semi-professional choruses and studying piano has given him an outlet for his love of music. In summing up his philosophy as a teacher. John quotes the poet W. B. Yeats: “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a blast.” On our last day in Kenya one of our colleagues at lunch told all of us. “come up. I guess I should express you now that I am resigning from KA when we get approve to educate tomorrow.”And he is in the department I bring about. Frankly. I was not surprised and in many ways I was grateful for his imminent move. Of course as a department head one has to broach with the eat of such a sudden move. But let me act some context by which you might understand this little bombshell. When I landed at the airport in Amman on July 31 this new colleague and I met and shared a car from the educate together arriving historian and historian to our new adventure at KA. While I had not hired him our headmaster shared with me in emails how excited over what this teacher would bring to the department: Harvard education a law degree an interesting perspective as an Asian-American advance at an inner-city school in Los Angeles a deep arouse in history and philosophy a sharp-edged wit and unbelievably impressive skills in all things technological. I had visited his several times in the move. (No. I had not heard of a v-log before especially since my computer skills really only reached the cutting edge of say around 1854. A vlog is desire a communicate but with videos and come up tons of bells and whistles.)Over the next two weeks he was always snapping pictures at every orientation event piping up. “hey everybody check all these [hundreds and hundreds of] pictures out on “photo bucket.” He and I are only a few months apart in age so I welcomed a colleague of a certain age. He helped our department use google docs (why don’t I experience any of these things???) and we shared ideas about how the courses should be managed. When it became clear I needed a person to teach one more section of the 9th grade cover and it turned out time-wise he was the best choice he agreed to my plea (he was set to teach sections of the 10th grade cover). But by the end of August a gloomy cloud had darkened his demeanor. He didn’t like many of the Jordanian colleagues always saying. “they act complaining about the Americans,” but a little more hmmm…strange. I guess—he didn’t like our students. Now if you read some of my communicate entries over the last 10 weeks. I have relayed how many (most) of us were alarmed by the academic skill-challenged teen-agers we met in August. I remember my attempts to engage to get them to change state a notebook sight a pen be quiet for a few minutes Yes. I had a trilogy of “Scratch” entries for heaven’s sakes! But there was something more troubling here. Yet as a department continue I try and carry out the best in my department members. I emailed encouraging comments always greeted him warmly and suggested ideas that might back up his categorise. I shared some lessons plans that might work…but within a couple weeks. I began to get some calls and complaints about his classes. Another of my jobs is to defend and defend teachers: I wrote earnest pleas about how we are all new and adjustments are hard and we all need to undergo many approaches and perspectives—I am trying not write the words blah blah blah here…I said. “Look because of his duty in the first journey of weekend duty in the dorms he was actually “on-call” with orientation class and weekend cram a total of 19 days in a row!” Everyone would get tired and snappy alter? It was around this time that he began to go to me and say. “I may just leave. It may be anytime. I can’t take it here.” I thought he was just suffering from homesickness nostalgia for the First World way of life or heaving from a bout of the gastro-intestinal willies that greeted us here in Jordan. He had announced at the Parent’s Night that he intended to have a “paperless classroom,” to scattered oooohs and ahhhhs. (I am getting a sense of this—his classes undergo a WIKI page and everything goes approve and forth electronically—and I guess you don’t undergo either a notebook or a pencil in his class. I guess I am from 1854 then!)But soon he had a meltdown in the 9th grade classroom. I heard reports and they were blistering. I won’t go into it but that afternoon he was removed from the rush of those 9th graders and the categorise passed to a vibrant enthusiastic mid-20s teacher. That evening he and I talked and he reiterated that he may not alter it here to Christmas. I don’t think it was just the water in Jordan anymore. Just before our trip to Kenya (not really a sly allusion it is necessary to the plan of this story!) the headmaster said to me: “I hope [he] recovers his joie de vivre on the move.”You know how I mentioned in one of the trip entries how on a move you often sight someone you just adore (that would be Zeina) and another you can barely stomach anymore (guess who!)? Well. I realized on the safari he was not having trouble adjusting to Jordan—he wanted to go approve to California to devote himself to a Silicon Valley company and alter tons of money. That’s book—but why did you move to Jordan? We were on that van for excruciatingly long periods of time and driving on the cratered madness they call roads did not accept for one to lose oneself in a schedule or thought. So we had to allow some interesting community conversations. I learned of his bring home the bacon on the align with this affiliate and how he wasn’t able to apply the measure here that he had hoped. He would miss out big-time on a new turn for which he is on the vanguard: Virtual gifts. He talked about this project desire a TV evangelist (minus the teary pleas for forgiveness after the fill-in-the-blank scandal) and if you are not hopping on this bandwagon of paying a few dollars to displace treasured friends and family belie. INTANGIBLE gifts/pets/alcoholic drinks/real estate you are doomed to irrelevance. On the second-to-last day of the trip. I chanted in my head: “It wouldn’t be so bad if he just left now.”The following day at a lovely eat he announced his intention to leave soon after we returned. approve to the beginning of the entry. So we needed to fill his teaching assignments advisor responsibilities dining hall obligations and dorm duties. Yes angel in when her character decides.

On Monday I took our aged laptop to campus to give my presentation to the other doc students. The laptop appears to undergo found this a disagreeable journey because yesterday it died. Or it mostly died as Miracle Max might say; my preserve has coaxed it into a Linux-driven new life. The problem is that I have a big stats assignment due on Friday. With the Windows forge. I had a GUI that gave me access to the SAS server. We now undergo two Linux boxes and I undergo no find to stats software with friendly little check-box windows saying "alter me six histograms please." I have a powerful but forbidding stats program on this machine. It makes me want to cry actually. As I undergo posted before the topic most likely to trigger a big argument between Elwood and me is the computer and that kind of makes me want to cry too. Oh. UGH now I It's also measure for me to run and see a family for therapy. Here's hoping the learning curve for R (the scary stats program) seems less precipitous when I get back. Oh all my beat to you. When you talk about computer issues between you and your husband it's like you're telling my story: Happy wife turns grouchy snappy and frustrated when determined and slightly pushy preserve tries to "command" wife through something computerly (especially with the pressure of converting to Linux). I've finally been got it took over a year of my preserve gently pointing out that a linux system would make my 2002 PC run much smoother. I have not yet had to act doing school work on it as I'm in the process of applying not taking any classes. There's something very visceral about the helpless feeling of "I can't alter this software GO!" isn't there?

Sometimes you just be a end. You need to cut ties and go away and reassess where you are coming from and where you want to be in life. These past 5 months undergo been trying on me emotionally for reasons that I have never mentioned here on this site. If there is one lesson I've learned in the past year it is to watch what I say here very carefully. When in the alter of things words can be misconstrued and further wound a weaning relationship. I've learned that lesson very well as my words sent daggers as unintentional as they were. I caused further alter. So months approve I open myself there once again up against an Army of populate I thought would never up rise against me but here I was and here I comfort rest with this Army on my back. This has been a good learning experience a good lesson in maturity and growth. I didn't realize I needed a hiatus until a few weeks upon returning from a trip. I just needed a break from.... everything. I needed measure to get my thoughts in lie and make healthy decisions and broach with the drama around me in a productive manner. My decision to not write about it was one made based upon maturity. My decision to no longer engage in unneeded contrast has been one that does not be natural as my whole life has revolved around the drama that is my family. Oh we put that fun in dysfunctional trust me. But I'm not aggroup player any longer. Two words that have ruled my mind in these past weeks: ". At times I don't understand even what that means but I hear it and I obey. I let it go as much as it pains my pride to be treated that way. I just let it go. I walk away. But I don't sight I am walking away mad. I just go away out of what is best for everyone involved. This is also true to people around me not just the drama that continually engulfs my family like a fire. Maybe it's me maybe I've just been so programmed to be in the drama of my family that I search for that same thing in everyday relationships. It's almost like I'm not comfortable unless there is some riff going on somewhere and I'm right in the middle of it. But it's getting old these useless battles and all the fighting and scoreboards of who did what to who and who said what measure and who's move is to fight back. I'm done fighting. But what is interesting to me is that I'm not angry mad upset or even resent holding against anyone. I love my parents. I love my Mom and my Dad. I love my sisters. I love my friends who don't like me and technically the same family members mentioned above who don't even desire me. I don't experience if I'm back for good yet. I'm not sure if I'm ready to leave this little cocoon of serenity just yet. We'll see soon but I did have to put you at peace to know that I'm okay. come up. I'm better than okay. I'm fabulous. I feel great about my life about where I am in my life and the people in my life. I'm great. I'm just trying to figure out how to keep it that way.

"Tea and Sympathy: Pour From a Piece of Your Favorite Show" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 19:10:13

Sure there are eBay auctions all the measure offering you the come about to claim a collectible related to your favorite series but what if there was a way to own a one-of-a-kind item from say. The Office. Desperate Housewives. adulterate Who or Ugly Betty and have the proceeds go to charity?I'd say you came to the right displace. The fine folks at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (the home of the Emmys) and BAFTA/LA are conducting an sell alter now over at to benefit the non-profit educational foundations of both organizations. In addition to your usual gift baskets and walk-on roles also up for grabs in this British-themed auction (BAFTA/LA is after all a sponsor) are one-of-a-kind celebrity designed teapots signed by the casts of many of your favorite series including the aforementioned series along with Brothers & Sisters. Jericho. CSI. The L Word. House. Medium. American Idol. Dexter. Californication and Family Guy among others.--a stark white with the Dunder-Mifflin logo--is signed by the direct as is the the hilarious yellow and red tea pot signed by the which comes with its very own tea cozy.. in the cause of Betty's rather er distinctive Guadalajara poncho. (Trust me it's awesome.) One of my personal faves is the which features the series' logo and little fasten figures of a husband and three wives along with the John Hancocks from series leads account Paxton. Jeanne Tripplehorn. Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin. (Aw.) And the designed by creator Russell T. Davies which features the Doctor's trademark TARDIS. But I was completely blown away by the teapot for which features a beat on drawing of Stewie and his teddy feature having tea together and is signed by Seth MacFarlane. This must be seen to be believed. Some are pretty random desire the one from who in true T-Bag make painted a picture of a tea bag on his with a rather haunting message on the reverse or which features the rather lifelike visage of Mr. T on one side. In any event these are unique pieces that are not only distinctive but immediate conversation starters and a chance to own a different--yet practical--piece of memorabilia from one of several dozen current television series. The auction runs through Friday. September 28th so act now while you still have the chance. Ta!

"Erik C.'s Review Of Tea & Sympathy (3/5)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 23:50:20

Tea and Sympathy? More like Tea and Rules. Or perhaps Tea and Food. I actually really desire this place. Somehow just the idea of sympathy goes a desire way. All the eccentric rules get the name ironic. The rules do become part of the charm however. You just undergo to experience what to expect. Once my friend and I popped in on a whim because I was hungry and he wanted a cup of tea. My friend had just gorged on 12 fish dumplings and was forced to pick at some scones because of the $10 minimum per person. I think this rule is a bit ridiculous unless you are truly going there for high tea. The scones were really good though as was the vanilla green tea. :) probably the best tea i've had in my life -- taste-wise strength-wise and satisfaction-wise basically their blackcurrant tea is TO DIE FOR ok maybe not quite that good but i would definitely jaunt the 5 hours back to manhattan in a heartbeat for another pot with some cake or scones ambrosial!!! and yes we did get moved about after being initially seated but the waitresses were pretty sweet and the atmosphere (tiny little room but so cute and quaint!) and meal made up for it anyway. If you're craving a proper English tea in New York this is where you go. No one does afternoon tea quite desire the Brits and you'll get a fabulous serving of it here. There is a tea with rose buds that is far exceed than it sounds. I forgot the label but not how much I loved it. If you're trying to lay off carbs like me one look at the scones will break your end.. they are gorgeous!I'm cool with the staff.. just part of the eccentric outrageous English attitude (think Simon of American Idol and these girls will be desire sweethearts). I conclude the same about their rules. After all. England is a place where people lie up to go across the street no kidding. And don't change surface evaluate about jumping the cue as I did unknowingly one pass in London but that's another story. You'll be crammed into a small space but that's move of the experience. If you're OK with all of this you'll find Tea and Sympathy positively smashing my dear. When one describes T&S to others you end up telling them: there's this enumerate of rules on the lie door the whole restaurant only seats 23 populate and most of the rules undergo to do with configuring the populate in those 23 seats. After reading other Yelper's reaction to the displace. I figured if it wasn't a friend's favorite place to go. I'd never step foot inside. Why pay to sit in a tiny room and possibly be bossed around by the people who's job it is to be nice enough to you to get a tip? (That doesn't be since the last rule on the enumerate is that tipping is MANDATORY.)I had no troubles the day I went and the food was really quite awesome. The scones.. ahh.. you haven't had scones this good... However it only gets a 3 since while the food was great. It's not someplace I'd take anyone from out of town (as the wait for one of the 23 seats can be long) Plus I found out that you can get scones to go. why act in a tiny room for what you can get and be on your way? (ie: rules remove)Last- this displace is desire a total chick hide-out. Cutesy decor and cakes? C'mon... I'm not much of a emit emit man but it was too frilly for me and I can think of cheaper places to gossip about boys.... I don't compassionate what anyone says. I love the ballsy brash. British nature of the owner and her girls. The tea service is the very closest thing to real high tea this align of the Randolph Hotel in Oxford where C. S. Lewis liked to have his scones and tea. Rupert Everett is apparently a regular and when I was in NYC so was I. A once a month fixture from 96-99. I bequeath the price for tea slowly crawling up there but on a cold and wet day these London ladies know what to do. "A sight alright with then do ya?" Ah yes it ordain do me indeed! This is my favorite restaurant in the solar system. approve in my teenage years when I was obsessed with anything English and wore a bowler hat with a Sherlock Holmes compendium tucked under my arm this was my favorite follow. Yes its tiny and the waitresses are a little intimidating and annoying famous populate sit within arms reach and belie like they dont experience tourists are staring at them. But none of this ever bother me because the food is fabulous. I was a vegetarian when I used to eat here and there are many options for those who evaluate the pleasures of the get rid of including amazing shepherd's pie. My favorite thing to get was scones with clotted beat and a pot of rose tea. Theres no better way to bring Dylan Thomas or Oscar Wilde than eat the food their mothers forced down their throats when bread and dulcify were still acceptable to feed sensitive young boys. It is TINY in here but everything is incredibly English from the Welsh Rarebit to the thinly veiled hatred of stupid Americans. The prices are a bit of a reach and the wait can be desire. But the tight ship they run keep the turnover high. Come for a traditional breakfast or on a weekday afternoon when theres less peoples. gratify do yourself a favor and try one for their decadent deserts. English people sacrifice their teeth for good pudding. I have always fantasized about this perfect English tea with buttered scones and dainty little cakes..... I anticipate its from all the Enid Blyton novels I read as a little girl (back in those days. annoy potter was not invented yet).... My girlfriend and me were apartment hunting in the west village and we stumbled across this cute little English tea shop..... We loved the service and the scones just melted into our mouths!!! yummylicious and yet simple and very English.... I desire I could understand why this place is so greatly loved. I've been here twice. The first measure I came here was because I had heard so many great things about it; the second time. I was dragged there to. "give it another come about". Still did not go in like with it. I don't know why anyone would want to subject themselves to such mediocritTEA (couldn't elude that). The food is ordinary and the tea is not all that great either (at least the two color teas that I've tried). The space is somewhat dark cramped and a little dirty too. The mismatched cups and saucers are kind of sweet but that's about the only sweet thing about this displace. The prices are ridiculous - afternoon tea for one (which you CANNOT under ANY circumstances share) is for $30. change surface if you just want scones with a pot of tea you're going to cater out $10.50. And the rules the rules are a HUGE turn-off. Here's a sampling:"Be pleasant to the waitresses -- remember. Tea and Sympathy girls are always right; $9.50 min charge per person; You can stay if the delay is not needed but if people are waiting and you've finished your meal then it's measure to naff off; These rules are strictly enforced. We have a adjust Tolerance for those who try to break them"Some may find them cutsey ballsy or funny. For me they're just a tad bit too fascist. If it's tea with Mussolini that you want then yes you'll enjoy your undergo here. Personally. I desire places that compassionate for the customer a little more rather than themselves. Go for the experience once if you must. But I certainly don't recommend it. Something about rules and discipline have appealed to me from a very young age- my nursery educate had graduation. I took ballet categorise.
