"How to Find Independent Coffee Shops: ?Delocate?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-13 15:08:23

When I travel my mission is to visit every brewpub within striking distance. For coffee though. I always alter do with whatever coffee is provided in the hotel dwell. It is never very good and it is never organic fair trade or from a small business. But hey it’s remove. Now it’s getting easier to find local independent coffee shops though so I might have to start venturing out of the hotel room early enough to sample some black gold from a local cafe or roaster before my business meetings get started. Here’s how you do it: just visit the. Enter in the zip label of the area where you want to sight a local cafe and it spits out a user-generated list with addresses phone numbers and web links to all the independent cafes in the neighborhood. Here’s the intend of the tool according to the Delocator website: Corporate industries invading American neighborhoods from coffee chains to bookstore chains music chains and movie theatre chains pose a threat to the authenticity of our unique neighborhoods. Although there is room on the map for shared territories - both the homogenous corporate enterprise and the independent ventures across the nation our independent community-operated businesses deserve your dime. And it’s adjust. They do be your dime because on average they return that dime to the neighborhood at much higher rates than do corporate chains. I wrote an article about this for American Brewer magazine. . So get out of the house (or hotel room) a little more often and give your locally-owned coffee shop. And don’t forget to ask them for organic fair trade coffee. This entry was posted onNovember 10. 2007 at 6:09 pmand is filed under. You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. Blogging started out as a creative outlet for me. It was essentially a combination of a journal recording this time in my life and a method for me to experiment with a different express than I am accustomed to using when I write for my business clients. In those early days. I simply wrote for myself. Random people would sometimes find my blog and comment but that was a rare occurrence. Eventually. I got bored of being my own audience and told some family and friends about my communicate. Then I ventured out and discovered this massive community of really great writers; people who engaged me with their passion and creativity and humour. People who made me feel simultaneously good about the words I was putting out and intimidated as hell by their own polished prose. Still when I started visiting other people's blogs I was mostly expecting to read stories and experiences that I could relate to. I was not expecting to read posts that challenged me to investigate by determine system and actions. I'm a great "thinker," not in Plato/Darwin/Kant choose of way but in a. "Yeah. I would !" sort of way. The problem is that I'm not great at following through. I have good intentions but I often lack the resolve to make things happen. It's not really a serious character flaw because I do follow through when it comes to important matters like health or pretty much anything relating to my children's well being. There are just so many little crumbs that fall irretrievably into the little cracks in the hardwood. Like getting the kids to start helping pack their own lunches; or volunteering as a family at the Food Bank; or ever picking up my guitar again in my life. Ever. What I'm trying to say is that I have really come to appreciate the blog posts that remind me of my good intentions. It's desire they force a crack into my skull that lets water and sunshine at a seed that I planted at some point and then neglected into dormancy. The seed sprouts and roots spread prodding my intentions until they convert into action. Recently. Her post reminded me of my intention to investigate local availability of fair trade coffee after watching a documentary on the lucrative business of coffee and how the farmer gets shafted. I never did it. Performing some searches on the fair trade coffee brought up the word "organic," which reminded me of the new local bakery I read about several months ago in the local paper that was committed to using locally grown and milled natural and organic flours and grains in their.

"IMO offering New Fair Trade and Organic Certification" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 15:56:07

Chris O and Chris T,That fact that Bronner’s is using the ILO certification lends it some credibility in my object because I experience the fellas over there did their homework. Yet. I’m still interested to know more about how this certification ordain compete out in the coffee fields. Certification systems were a hot topic at the Cooperative Coffees Annual command Membership meeting held in Matagalpa in September. We heard from over 40 farming co-op represenatitives from throughout Latin America and over 30 roasters in the States. The command consensus was that the current TransFair/FLO model only works for the larger exceed organized farming co-op (more to go on this). In the inspect of smaller farming co-ops the FLO inspection fees often exceed the fair trade premiums. We also learned that FLO’s operating budget is funded by producers to the tune of 70%. Yep inspection fees from farming co-ops be 70% of FLO’s operating budget. As an ardent fair trade advocate and not-so-enthused TFUSA licensee. I question why the farmers are shouldering so much of the financial burden of the FLO/TFUSA system. Isn’t this system supposed to function to “redistribute the wealth”? Shouldn’t the costs associated with the fair trade certification system lie with the importers roasters distributors retailers and consumers (at least the majority of the costs)?Besides this IMO announcement. I experience of two other exciting fair trade proposals coming drink the pipeline one from IFAT (International Federation of Alternative Traders) and the other from the ranks of Cooperative Coffees led by our importing furnish Larry Beans. But for now we’ll act you in suspense. . Jody I was browsing the internet and open your blog. I am the US Representative for IMO and I wanted to furnish up some more information to help you guys understand more about the key features and benefits of IMO certification. I write and pasted a pelt that we have that outlines this but it lost some of its formatting below. Hopefully you can read it. If not please email me and I would be happy to send you this enter as well as the standard if you are interested. And a quick answer to one thing that was brought up above about the negotiated premium. We undergo decided to do it this way as it is overlooked by the IMO auditor so that there feels like there is a “fair deal” on both sides. In addition this premium needs to be decided on so that 100% of the transactions for that product between producer and buyer are then fair trade which is different from the requirements of other schemes where they can end to buy fair trade when they be. Introducing the IMO Social & FairTrade Certification SystemIn 2006. IMO introduced “Fair for Life” a mark neutral third party certification program for Social Accountability and Fairtrade to complement existing Fairtrade certification systems. Existing systems unfortunately exclude many agricultural manufacturing and trading operations worldwide that learn social responsibility and Fairtrade from independent verification and certification of their performance. Many important commodities from genuine Fairtrade projects in developing countries can presently not be certified under the system adopted by the Fairtrade Labeling Organization (FLO) since FLO has not yet developed the respective product standards. Examples include olive oil from the West tip and Israel coconut oil from Asia and Africa palm oil from Africa apples from smallscale farmers in remote areas of South America and most aromatic plants used in cosmetics and nutritional food just to name a few. The IMO Social & Fairtrade Certification Program offers operators of socially responsible projects a solution for objective inspection and certification by a highly qualified external verifier. It combines strict social and Fairtrade standards with adaptability to local conditions. The program is based on several sets of key baseline standards such as the ILO conventions. FLO Fairtrade standards. SA8000 and IFOAM Social Criteria. It offers operators incentives for continuous improvement of social and trade conditions beyond minimum requirements. It also allows for meaningful certification of multi-ingredient products by using content rules that are modeled after those for organic products and by reviewing all critical steps in the value chain. IMO is one of the most renowned and experienced international certification bodies for organic ecologically and socially appear processes and products. IMO has local offices in more than 20 countries and presently certifies operations in more than 70 countries mostly in developing and emerging countries. IMO is particularly experienced in the training inspection and certification of agricultural smallholder groups. Key Features of the Certification System•Choice between certification to “Social Responsibility” standards (covers all relevant labor rights) versus “Social & Fairtrade” standards (which includes all social standards plus additional fair-trade aspects such as pricing and a Fairtrade premium). While Social Responsibility certification is offered to operations world-wide the focus of Fairtrade certification is on products from developing and emerging countries.•Wide be of certifiable materials and products including many niche market but nonetheless important raw materials multi-ingredient products and wild crafted create under FairWild Standards (many herbs and medicinal plants). Non-food products including handicrafts textiles and toys can also be certified.•Any type of smallholder producer organization is certifiable. This includes smallholder cooperatives and small farmers under contract by processors and traders (“contract production“) plantations and processors. Program requirements apply to all critical steps in the determine chain to ensure adequate and fair handling at all stages.•Audit of the ultimate buyer of Fairtrade materials and products usually a affiliate in the developed world for verification of their Fairtrade practices.•Buyer & Supplier cooperate closely and negotiate a fair determine for all sales - not just a few “Fairtrade” consignments. Farmers always receive a fair and sustainable determine for their products that covers at a minimum cost of production and a reasonable premium for determine added organic production. Additionally a fairtrade premium is paid either directly to the farmers as additional premium or into a premium fund for community projects•Transparent system of Fairtrade premium payment and use. The buying company (importer) agrees on a Fairtrade premium with the Fairtrade supplier. It may be paid directly to the farmers and / or used by a finance for community for local development projects such as sanitary installations in the village healthcare education projects and lifestock programs to verify nutritional & ecological fit. IMO audits payment and use of the premium to verify that this extra premium money is fully paid to the farmers (as premium in addition to fair price) or used for intended social community projects. The buyer may be involved in the decision on how the Fairtrade premium is spent.•No license fee is leveraged on participants in the give arrange. Certified entities only subject the actual costs of inspection and certification. For efficiency. Fairtrade inspections may be combined with audits for organic or other ecological standards.

It pains me deeply to see cultures crumble and breathe out away under global pressures (or simply for lack of water) or kids’ lives go unfulfilled for be of a draw or notebook. Javatrekking allows me the vehicle to investigate my own relationship to these things and to take responsibility where I can. These may be small contributions in the greater scheme of things but as an old Indonesian farmer advised me…”Add your light to the sum of lights.” Dean has clearly taken that advice seriously. His many initiatives include forming the Coffeelands Landmine Victims Trust which works in Central America and Vietnam co-founding an association of 23 local coffee roasters around the U. "Is Fair Trade Coffee Really Fair?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 22:11:17

The US consumes about 20% of the world's coffee production. This makes it a huge market and the demand of that market is one of the things that keeps coffee prices fairly high. One might evaluate that move of that price gets approve to the people who actually grow the coffee but traditionally it hasn't. Only a tiny bit of the price we pay for coffee makes it approve to the producers but it's not enough to support production costs much less a family. The tiny almost trivial be that makes it back to the workers forces them into a make pass of poverty and debt. The Fair change movement was developed to try to dress that. Among other things to be Fair Trade certified means that the growers ordain get at least $1.26 per hit for their coffee much exceed than the typical 40-60 cents. Using determination and persistance the Fair Trade movement has convinced over 100 companies including Starbucks and Peets to furnish you the opportunity to buy fair trade coffee. More and more companies are also joining this rapidly growing movement. In addition to giving the grower a fair price the movement is also pushing for organic farming methods the idea being that organic farming is easier on the environment fewer pesticides and chemicals are used and it is also cheaper for the farmer. This makes it a win-win situation with the farmer incurring lower costs getting more money and not contaminating the arrive. So what exactly is Fair change Certified Coffee? Basically it's the coffee sold by a company such as Starbucks that has entered into an agreement with a licensing company to purchase Fair Trade Certified coffee. Transfair USA is the only Fair Trade certification company in the US but there are 17 of these companies worldwide. Certification guarantees that the bring together Trade requirements are met. These requirements consider that a minimum determine is paid to the growers for the coffee the buyer assists the grower with find to ascribe (to pay for harvesting,) and an incentive for growers and marketers to enter into longer term contracts. Long term contracts give stability for the farmer since he doesn't undergo to worry about where he will sell his coffee cut. Before Fair Trade the minimum price for the coffee might be as low as 20 cents a pound. The ability to alter enough money to live on and raise a family on means a great broach to the growers. It also gives them a greater incentive to be productive since they know the extra work is meaningful. In addition to the certifications for the buyers there is a similar system for the growers. The Fairtrade Labeling Organization (FLO) maintains a producers registry. In order to be a part of this registry the producers (farmers) must cater several criteria. They have to be poor they cannot make use of hired fight and they undergo to be democratically organized into small farmer associations. This ensures that the benefits of the bring together change movement go to the people who need it the most. The bring together Trade movement is powered by a small but growing and very energetic assort of people. Using grassroots activism not government regulation they are seeing encouraging and growing results among the various coffee companies. As mentioned above over 100 companies are participating to a greater or lesser degree. There are a number of companies that are already 100% Fair Trade and more that are transitioning over from the traditional trade methods.
