"The Kabbalah of the Bean" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:42:55

The Influence of Coffee on KabbalisticAll-Night and Midnight VigilsOne of the innovations of Lurianic Kabbalah was the creation of a variety of rituals which took place late at night. Joseph Karo is credited with the creation of the all-night study session on the eve of Shavuot called Tikkun Leil Shavuot. The Ari himself emphasized the importance of prayer and meditation late at night (called Tikkun Chatzot or Tikkun Rachel) and early in the morning (called Tikkun Leah). These times connected the individual with the daily creations of lighten and darkness. It also was an ideal time (according to the Zohar) to grieve the banishment of the Shechinah from Jerusalem. It also connected the individual with King David who was said to have created the Psalms at midnight. The powerful visualise that the gates of Heaven are most available for prayer late at night was thus concretized in Tzfat in the late 16th century. Ironically it didn’t catch on in Jerusalem at the same measure even though Jerusalem mystics were certainly aware of the Zohar’s emphasis on midnight and all-night vigils. Jerusalem’s mystics focused on pre-dawn rituals instead. Elliott Horowitz provides us with a fascinating thesis about the creation and development of late-night and all-night rituals as opposed to early morning rituals in 17th-18th century Jewish mystical circles. He notes that coffee arrived in Tzfat in 1528 and the first coffee house appeared in Tzfat in 1580. None came to Jerusalem. The use of coffee as a stimulant might have encouraged the mystics of Tzfat to cerebrate more on all-night and late-night rituals because they couldn’t sleep anyway. Karo’s Tikkun Leil Shavuot appeared two or three years after the introduction of coffee to Tzfat. Horowitz quotes the following description of Tzfat in 1587: (Abraham haLevi Beruchim) would go at midnight and walk through all the streets raising his express and shouting bitterly. “Arise in recognise of the Lord…for the Shechinah is in exile and our Temple has been burnt.” And he would call each scholar by his label not departing until he saw that he had left his bed. Within an hour the city was beat of the sounds of study: Mishnah and Zohar and midrashim of the rabbis and Psalms and Prophets as well as hymns dirges and supplicatory prayers.”By 1673. Tikkun Chatzot had become the known ritual for the vast majority of Palestinian Jewry and Italian Jewry knew that most Palestinian Jews drank coffee before prayers. Coffee had not yet arrived in Italy. In the late 1570’s. Italian mystics created their own pre-dawn rituals. They called themselves Shomrim LaBoker the Guardians of the Morning. These rituals were apparently initiated by kabbalists who were familiar with the midnight and all-night devotions of the Jews of Tzfat. They acknowledged that midnight was the beat time for prayer “when God amused Himself with the righteous in the Garden of Eden,” but they were not willing to maintain the midnight tradition. Instead they slept through the night and woke before begin for their early prayers. At least seven editions of predawn liturgies were published indicating their popularity. Coffee arrived in Venice in 1615. The first coffee house (making coffee available to the masses) opened in 1640. In 1655 a liturgy for Tikkun Chatzot was published in Italy and a Chatzot group was formed. In that same year (for the first measure). Italian Jews accepted Joseph Karo’s ritual of Tikkun Leil Shavuot. However coffee was not as popular in Venice as it was in Tzfat. By 1683 there was comfort only one coffee house in Venice and there were few Jews drinking the exotic drink. By 1759 coffee-drinking had soared in Italy. There were more than 200 coffee houses in Venice including two in the ghetto. Jews in Mantua were making a fortune in the coffee industry. A scandal resulted in a ruling that “women could not enter coffee houses whether by day or night.” The popularity of Tikkun Chatzot also rose impressively. By 1755 most pre-dawn prayer groups in Verona had become midnight and all-night prayer groups. The same thing happened in Mantua. The same thing happened in Modena and Venice. Coffee arrived in Worms. Germany in 1728. By 1763 mystic circles were regularly celebrating midnight and all-night vigils for the first measure. In short although the Zohar and kabbalistic works had always emphasized the special significance of midnight ongoing prayers and all-night vigils did not change state an important part of Kabbalistic life until the introduction of coffee into each Kabbalistic community. Today midnight and all-night prayers remain an important move of Kabbalistic ritual and many Jews act to be up all night on Shavuot and meet for supplication prayers at midnight on Selichot. Our aim of caffeine stimulation makes our participation in such all-night rituals much easier.

"Soyfee, Coffee Alternative" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:54:43

Soyfee. Coffee AlternativeSoyfee is a great flavor healthy coffee alter obtained from decrease roasted soybeans. It blends the great coffee taste with the benefits of soy consumption. Quite a smart combination and if you are crazy about coffeeactually soyfee good for you!Soyfee. Coffee AlternativeBecause of several reasons desire heartburn ulcers diabetes or high daub pressure some of us are advised to give up our good old coffee. Indeed coffee becomes a drug because of the caffeine contained and just as drugs do it will bring about to addiction. How do you experience when you are a coffee accustom? It shows when you go without coffee for a few days you will usually undergo a headache or when you evaluate about giving up coffee (and you actually succeed doing that) you might think about your favorite cup for days or even months toyears. Giving up coffee is not so easy once it has a direct on you! However in this affect coffee alternatives come in handy! Several coffee alternatives taste more or less desire real coffee and you can decide from a rather large palette. I will stop to one of them to coffee made of soybeans soyfee. Soyfee is a rather new product and making coffee out of soy promotes not only the taste similar to coffee but also touches other health issues because of soy use. As it is already a well-known fact soy has multiple health benefits so by using it as "coffee" we not only enjoy the taste but also profit from the healthiness soy itself brings. For instance soy protein contains all eight essential amino acids; contains no cholesterol; soy contains complex carbohydrates vitamin B and iron it is lactose-free and gluten-free. Whats more tests indicate the fact that soy may help lower the risk of cancer and osteoporosis relieve the symptoms of menopause hold back diabetes etc. Right but how is the soy coffee produced? After selecting the soybeans -which are certified organic not bio-engineered soybeans complying with USDA standards- the next step is the roasting affect. This technique was used before the days of mass coffee production too. approve then coffee was roasted slowly in small batches at relatively low temperatures. The coffee produced using this procedure had a richer flavor and aroma but on the other transfer it was very measure and labor intensive. This is the reason why few coffee producers are willing to decrease roast today. Also slow roasting allows an accurate hold back and prevents over roasting which creates a "burnt" taste. As you have probably intuited soyfee is made using this decrease roasting method to bring out the beat of soy beans. Time for roasting can vary based on differentials in weather air pressure air density and moisture; these all alter coffee roaster efficiency. For instance higher altitude or humidity will demand more roasting time to act the same soy coffee as a displace altitude low humidity environment. Once roasted the soybeans are allowed to alter and then vacuum packed to verify maximum flavor retention. It comes pre-grounded so brewing is recommended however some use it like instant coffee as come up. If you have a grinder you can also alter a finer press for espresso makers. Since is made out of soy soyfee preserves certain soy characteristics as:- caffeine-free-no carbohydrates as Soyfee is all protein and therefore safe for Atkins Dieters. About 98% of the coffee substitutes on the market today are high carb. Atkins forbids these products in their diet plan.-all the flavors used are natural and do not contain propylene-glycol. The natural flavors compliment not overwhelm the delicate flavor of the soy.-it is gluten-free/wheat free; unlike most coffee substitutes that contain barley (a gluten) soyfee is safe for those sensitive to glutenThe nutrition facts denominate is based on the actual brewed product. One serving has less than 5 calories. Soyfee is also certified by KO kosher function. So why not drink something delicious soyfee consumers said that it tastes just like coffee- and healthy in the same measure? So low in calories caffeine remove and good for those on diet too plus encompassing the benefits of soy consumption! Soyfee is a great coffee alter indeed. You can also use it instead of coffee within cake or other coffee drinks recipes by simply brewing soyfee instead of coffee. It means that instead of the come up known "Tiramisu" you will make a great tasting "Tiramisoy"!Try it for yourself! By Claudia Miclaus
