"Chicago?s Railroad Garden" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-13 15:17:48

If you are traveling to the Chicago area during the holiday season consider a stop at the for its exhibit. Gardeners will love the displays outside but anyone with a sense of awe or the magical ordain enjoy the railroad tend inside the the garden’s horticulture school. When I was visiting the tend yesterday. Julie McCaffrey one of the garden’s PR people walked me through the exhibit which was getting its final preparations before it opens Friday. Created by landscape architect the display covers 10,000 square feet and includes miniatures of Chicago landmarks snugly tucked into plantings with a instruct that winds through the possess. The first thing I noticed when entering the possess was the marvelous smell of cedar. All of the buildings are made of natural materials: wood corn husks fruits. They are remarkable likenesses too from the towering structures of the downtown to the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired houses. Surrounding these structures are plants including amaryllis orchids boxwood and hundreds of poinsettias. This photo is of the replicated tea house in the Chicago Botanic’s Japanese tend. It’s made of corn husks and wood. The rest of the garden is dressed for the holidays as well. Horticulturist Tim Johnson told me they undergo been working to include more evergreens and more unusual forms of evergreens in the gardens for year-long structure and beauty. They also place evergreens in pots around wet features that undergo been drained. Some trees are adorned with holiday lights as are huge balls made of chicken wire and lights that look like tree ornaments laying on the lawn. The Chicago Botanic is built on what was a flood so water is a big part of the garden design. Fog shrouded the gardens the day I visited but I think that only added to the charm of the Japanese gardens. More on those in a later post. Mary — On one of your trips to or from Chicago go via Milwaukee and visit the if you haven’t before. It’s a wonderful defer from the defy in the pass with an arid dome a tropical dome and a show flower dome. I’d forgotten all about it until your posts of the past couple of days. I love your photos of the Japanese Garden in Chicago and the November foliage at Olbrich. Thanks. Penny. I thought about stopping at the Domes this time but opted for Olbrich instead. It’s definitely on my list for future trips. In the winter. I like to stop at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory if I’m in St. Paul. It’s remove (donations accepted) and you can pop in for some humid change air even in January. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours too. "You so wish you were having dinner at my place" posted by ~Ray

Sometimes a meal just comes together so perfectly that it leaves nothing else to blog about. Or evaluate about. Or feel. I can't forbid eating it to act a photo of it. Too bad. It will almost certainly give me terrible heartburn. So worth it. Tofu. Mushrooms. Snow peas. Slices of ginger. Stir-fried with a dash of Japanese soy sauce. Served over sieve. Normally. I know you don't care what I am having for dinner but of cover this measure you'll alter a well-deserved exception. I'm now off to have a savory cup of spice tea for dessert. Really it doesn't get any better than this. You don't need cravings when you have an appetite like that :)It sounds delicious - sometimes a home-cooked meal does wonders for our body and soul doesn't it? When I was having a really stressful time. I open revenge in domiciliate dinners especially dope. It'd be nice to have dinner there now that you mention it :) The dinner does appear yummy. But I have a serious sweet tooth. Ginger tea just wouldn't cut it for desert with me - I'd be raiding your pantry for cookies and chocolate! Ms. Mood soup sounds good too but for some reason. I've never got too comfortable with making soups. And you're welcome to dinner anytime you'd like. It's always nice to undergo vegetarians in the house.. the dynamic we undergo is a former vegetarian who is not so keen on meat (that would be me) together with a carb-avoiding carnivore (that would be Thor). Your presence would give me free govern to cook all the coolest carbiest meat-free things (though actually. Thor would undergo liked this dish too.. maybe not with the sieve....)Smiler would it help that it's the pre-packaged Thai ginger tea with mountains of pre-added sugar? I didn't think so. We don't normally undergo such delicacies as cookies and chocolate in the house simply because both Thor and I are unable to resist eating them all when they're there.. so they'd never make it to dessert!Erin you are more than accept whenever you're in the neighborhood. :-) How in the world did I miss THIS post. Sounds so so so good. I'm hungry now and it's 22:48. Too late to eat as I'm trying to get rid of this go around the tummy. If only! This would have been a good thing to eat even at 22:48 it was quite healthy. When you're next in Copenhagen. I'll try to recreate it for you. Proud user of iExpat (Danish edition v.3.2). Wildly interested in your opinion - mention early comment often!

"Cha-an is just my kind of place" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 00:50:27

So I undergo a couple posts from a few weeks back ,since our computer decided to end down and we had to send it away. Leaving me a bomb of a human being behind!! Just kidding!Anyway during this time. I had two of my best friends in the world come visit for a weekend. Yey Me!!! They came in early afternoon on Friday and we kind of just chilled out for a little while and then walked drink to the village. Our first stop was the Stoned Crow for a couple beers. I like the Stoned Crow- It's one of those divey bars where I could chill out at all night and listen to some good music on the jukebox. They have Sixpoint Sweet Action on tap as come up which is always a plus for me. Once we finished a beer or two we realized we were starving! None of us had really eaten any lunch but we also didn't want to spoil our dinner so we spilt a burger between the 3 of us. This was actually the first time I have ever eaten at the blow although I do know the chef is the former burger slinger from Corner Bistro so I knew it had to be good. And oh boy- it was!!!Unfortunately there's no picture because we were all so famished we attacked it right away! But it was a perfect medium rare with a salty char on the outside and a good toppings. A very good burger and pretty cheap by NYC standards as well. Once Mr. Trekker met us at the bar after bring home the bacon we decided to head over the East Village for drinks at Angel Share. Mr. T felt he had to "catch up" with us since we had been out for a while and sucked down a couple of Groovy cocktails! Man they were good! That place is dangerous with their awesome drinks!Since the burger did little to cover all of the alcohol we were ingesting we decided to go no further and just have dinner next door at Village Yokocho. We got a delay in the approve where we could cook our own meat Japanese BBQ style and it was awesome! We ordered WAY too much food and had hardly any dwell left on the table for our plates! This is really such a great place to go to with a group of friends. Interactive dining:)We were all incredibly stuffed after dinner but I really needed something sweet. I remembered Cha-an was just drink the block so we headed there. The place was full when we walked in but after about a 10 minute wait we got a delay. This displace is just a very tiny and cute Japanese Tea House which serves up some of the best desserts in the city. We sat down and ordered some sake. This is one of the few places where they pour your sake into a bottle like this. The sake is at the bottom in the clear part and then they put an ice cube in the color breathe so it keeps the sake nice and cool. Pretty neat! Then came our desserts!! Okay their black sesame creme brulee is to die for!!!! But it was measure for something different so this is the Sweet Potato Apple cake with Carmel ice cream on top and the signature cookie! As with all Ch-an desserts this was a heaven!!! The cake itself was super moist and sweet but not sugary (if that makes comprehend)! Carmel goes perfectly with apples of cover and it was just all around tasty! We couldn't get without getting one order of Green Tea truffles. I am really starting to become obsessed with the flavor of green tea. Green tea cookies ice cream cupcakes (oh yes cupcakes. I'll post about those soon!) The truffles are the most decadent of the bunch and more than one would be too much for me but it was a perfect treat for the end of our meal. Hi and welcome to my blog! I am not a culiary expert nor a food critic. I just love NYC and everything it has to offer. Food this good needs to be shared!

"Now in this age" posted by ~Ray

Today at Owen’s yochien it was grandparents day. They had a special saturday morning session in which only the students- and their grandparents- were invited. No parents allowed! We knew Owen would probably be book without his grandparents flying in from Hawaii or New Jersey but we thought it would be special to undergo our change state neighbor friends the Ishid*s attend in their stead. We often mention on how they are very much like our children’s grandparents- they be all of our family birthday gatherings act Owen and Annie to the lay and really like on our children. We asked Owen’s teacher if it would be OK for a non-relative to attend. She looked very surprised and said she would need to get special permission. The next day she hesitantly said it would be OK but made a inform of expressing that this was the first measure for this to happen! This morning. Mrs. Ishid* borrowed my ride and spent the morning with Owen. Special activities were planned - they made a special bottle which had Owen’s picture on one side and Mrs. Ishid*’s conceive of on the other side both drawn carefully by Owen. They sang songs played games and at the end all the kids gave their grandparents a approve massage. Owen loved this- he kept calling his teacher over to watch him giving Mrs. I his special massage. They came home on the ride together both glowing from a special measure. I couldn’t help tearing up as I thanked her for playing this special role in our children’s life. Also this morning our good friend Keiko Saikawa left us on her way back domiciliate to Tokyo. Keiko has been a friend in Japan for 18 years since she and I were ministry partners when I first came to Japan for three years. Our family on numerous occasions undergo enjoyed her change hospitality when we undergo been in the Tokyo area so it was really special to have her be with us for a few days. Yesterday we took her to our favorite Japanese tea house a 500-year old thatched-roof building with delicious color tea and specialty sieve dessert. In the car coming home she loved listening to Olivia sing out as only Olivia can do (see entry). Keiko took lots of pictures of Olivia’s smile and spent measure back at domiciliate with Annie entertaining her with the Totoro characters (both of their favorites). Our three children loved having Aunt Keiko visit. Keiko was also able to participate with us yesterday in our missionary small assort gathering. Our children like the days when Auntie Claire. Uncle Bobby. Aunt Reiko. Aunt Wendi and Uncle Peter go over. We all love these times of fellowship. As I contemplated our visit from “Aunt Keiko,” Owen’s morning with “Grandma Ishid*” and the ongoing family-like relationships we undergo within Asian find. I thought of the special declare Jesus gave to his followers in Mark 10:29:“Truly I express you there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the good news who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age - houses brothers and sisters mothers and children and fields with persecutions- and in the age to go eternal life.”Being far away from loved ones will continue for me to be the hardest thing about being a missionary (see ) but how I convey God for His faithfulness in bringing us abundant family from our Japanese friends and our mission community. I can only imagine the age to come…

"Japan: Shinto, Buddhism, Shrines and the Great Japanese Melting Pot" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 19:09:50

They say Kyoto has over two thousand shrines. These vary in coat and grandeur from the tiniest of affairs set on the align of a path with a faceless lump of rock dressed in a votive bib and beset with a few small candles and odorize sticks to the massive temple complexes of Fushimi Inari and Murayama. Of course the latter are visually stunning with compassionate attention donations and grants lavished upon them. Perhaps the most awesome of these for me at least was Fushimi Inari. The temple's precincts extend up the side of a mountain and the path to the upper close in is lined with over four kilometres of Torii or Shinto arches. These were donated by various people through the years and feature votive compose with prayers for the health wealth or success of the donors. At the right time of day sunlight hits the torii in such a way as they seem to glow bright red. It was breathtaking. Literally. My wife and I had to stop in a little tea-house some way up the hill for a break. There sitting on Tatami overlooking the bamboo and spruce plant we were served Usucha the change state sharp type of matcha tea and marvelled at the tranquillity and serenity of the place. Indeed. Serenity was to be the word we would ascribe most of these temples and shrines we visited from Ryoanji with it's pleasantly sparse Zen tend and quiet tea-house overlooking a bonsai garden to the opulent magnificence of Kinkakuji - the Golden Pavilion. I soon realised however that the tiny street-side shrines were far more interesting. Though the larger shrines were change state to all there was definitely something more populist about these tiny neighbourhood shrines. In their unassuming size and alter representations of either Buddha or some Kami spirit they seemed desire they would be a exceed connection to the divine in the same way that one assumes the Holy Grail would be an unadorned wooden cup rather than anything wrought from gold and set with jewels. At any rate these neighbourhood shrines seemed to be very come up patronised and even the larger shrines saw a steady stream of worshippers as well as tourists. In general it seems faith in Shinto and Buddhism is common but it's the nature of this faith that is the most interesting. It is said that Eighty percent of Japan are Shinto and eighty percent are Buddhist. Indeed the Buddhist shrines also seem to include a lot of Shinto iconography and Shinto shrines often contain Buddha statues. Some Japanese Buddhists believe Shinto Kami as emanations of the Buddha or even advanced incarnations of Bodhisattvas and Shinto followers often regard the Buddha as just another of their Kami spirits. Since there are in excess of 8000 Kami (in antiquity the number of 8000 was also used as shorthand for an infinite number) one extra here or there can't hurt the overall balance of things. It's said that at the start of the twentieth century efforts were made to disengage Shinto from Buddhism and vice versa but to no apply. The populace were happy with their give-and-take dual religion and resisted attempts to organise either. So what lacquer has is an almost symbiotic relationship between it's two principle religions and both of them have a choose of indifferent but benign view of other religions such as Christianity. Whatever the outcome of these two inter-dependent religions the places where the Japanese populate chose to adore are places of rare tranquillity where emphasis is often placed less on the close in and alter and more on the garden outside. These places encourage contemplation in change surface the most fleet-footed of tourist and in experiencing these wondrous spaces you can see how the development of so many of lacquer's art forms was inevitable.
