I was woken this morning to the sound of howler monkeys didn't see them but sure could hear them. I checked I had everything and headed for breakfast my driver was already there about an hour and a half early dropped my bag off and went for breakfast anyway he said he didn't mind waiting although he was not the friendliest of drivers. come up the drive was pretty uneventful and I spent the whole time listening to my ipod. We arrived in San Jose and he dropped me at Jan's office it was really great to cater with the whole office and Jan and I went out for a Mexican lunch which was really great and we sat chatting for ages then I got transferred back to the hotel Europa. Well I was welcomed like royalty they gave me a huge dwell the hotel is very classic call and reminds me of an uptown new york style hotel. They furnish free internet and gave me vouchers for a free dinner and breakfast yahoo!!!Then it was time to continue off to explore the town of San Jose. I went down to the central Mercado which is a tour within its own it sells everything from amazing flowers to fresh fish coffee or souvenirs. There are loads of people and I could spend all day here people watching. Then it was shopping measure ended up buying a few new t-shirts and a jumper as I only brought along one decided I have to do my shopping when I get to Antigua. Then back to the hotel for a lovely dinner and my bed I am thoroughly exhausted. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Copyright &write; 1997 - 2008 TravelPod com a proud founder of travel blogs on the web. If you live in the United States then you are no doubt feeling the change of seasons.  Believe it or not it has been chilly here too.  Now when I say chilly. I only mean around 60 degrees but relatively speaking that is chilly for this part of the world.  I actually used the heater in our car the other day!  That is something I never expected to need in Costa Rica! We have one month of educate left before our Christmas end and the end of our first trimester on December 14th.  It has been a great three months.  Keeley and I have learned so much about the language and culture since we arrived on August 18th. Our girls are doing come up.  They apply their classes and look forward to going to school each morning.  Each of the girls undergo made friends in their classes and it is enjoyable to watch them create socially.  In less than a year they ordain have to experience leaving friends once more as the parents of their friends (other Language School students) get the Language initiate for the mission field.  Keeley and I will experience this too as the Lord has given us some great friendships with some other missionaries studying here.  Not an experience any of us particularly apply but a reality of life none the less.  There is always Skype right? American Thanksgiving is next Thursday and we are going to undergo several other families over for a traditional dinner.  We were able to buy a whole turkey for the negociate price of $32.00.  They are hard to sight here they only have them because of the large gringo population.  We are looking forward to some turkey pumpkin pie and some great fellowship. convey You! Four other families joined us on this excursion.  We went to a place called Punta Leona at the recommendation of several Ticos.  The drive was only around 2 1/2 hour long and very scenic.  At one point when we got near the coast there was a river bridge we stopped at to look at the crocodiles down below. God blessed us with awesome weather and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The land was great.  The swimming pools were great.  The food was great.  The restaurant where we ate our meals is open-air and while we ate there were white faced monkeys all around.  We had to watch them all the time or they would back up themselves to whatever was on your coat!  Our girls really enjoyed the monkeys and coati. "More On Costa Rica" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:00:40

Why am I writing on this. It happened a year ago and I went their to complete a birdwatching itch that I first got about twenty five years ago. I went by myself to a country were a lot of Spanish is spoken. A lot of refried beans and rice are eaten and the cofee is actually quite good change surface when it is bad. I did see lots of new birds. Some of the best birds I saw were from while I was waiting to eat a meal each day at LaSelva Biological Station. They had a neat tend that attracted bids and their was quite a migration of raptors from the porch of LaSelva on two days. I must add that the howler monkeys and collared peccaries that I almost stepped on were pretty scary and neat. I did see Scarlet McCaws from my tent at Corcovado; maybe 6 times. I would go to Costa Rica just for the Mountainous scenery and coffee. <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong>

Our lives and the blog continue to evolve as we come the two year mark in our new lives. Join us for a glimpse into our reality and analyse approve to see what the future holds for A New Life in Costa Rica. We be in coffee country not just the country for coffee we actually live among the coffee plants here in San Ramon. I've been keeping an eye on the plants the past month and am starting to see the beans ripen. Bill and I undergo driven around a bit lately and have seen the coffee at different elevations ripening with some areas already being picked. It's interesting to me this year as we now undergo time under our belts and can recognize the yearly routines go into play. For example the coffee fields next to our accommodate aren't picked for the first time until December while other fields we frequently pass start their first picks in November. Bill is becoming quite the expert at who does what when and often comments that "they always" do this or that at such and such a measure. It's funny seems like he's lived a lifetime here already. For those who aren't aware the beans for that delicious cup of coffee you're sipping are all transfer picked. ( OK. I'm sipping delicious. Costa Rican shade grown organic coffee while I'm writing ) Whole families tie baskets around their waists and manually pick each ruby red bean at it's arrive at. The beans ripen at different rates so the same bushes are picked several times during the season. Talk about monotonous tedious work. Work done for literally pennies. When the picking day is finished a good six hours after starting the beans are bagged and trucked to one of the collection stations. The beans are dumped in on one side. Later when the bins are full the trucks hauling the beans to be processed pull up under the spout which is then lowered and voila the beans are loaded and on their way to becoming your ( ) morning cup (or pot) of Joe. Yes that's over simplifying but I've yet to take a tour of the coffee processing plants so it's the best I can do at the moment. A plantation tour is on the short list of things to do on Callista's pass but I'm guessing she'll veto it. After all she doesn't drink the stuff. "Costa Rican Culture....now you see it soon you wont!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 18:46:00

I am now sat in the delightful Pension Santa Elena hostel near to Monteverde trying to go down off a caffeine high. Despite being in coffee grower country would you accept that getting your hands on a decent cup is sometimes quite a challenging feat.... most of the good cram is sent abroad!! And never let it be said that I don´t desire a fine cup of coffee. Now I know that by rights being a Brit and all I should be getting tea withdrawal symptoms some weeks ago sorry to baffle but I only drink tea when I need to say when I have just come off a windy rainy cheat mountain or stepped indoors during a cold winter and for be of nothing else to drink tea is the only option to change my cockles. But this place does appear to have the coffee situation sorted and I have 3 mugfuls coursing through my veins as we speak. All consumed in the last 2 hours as I have mosied around the place chatting to fellow hostellers in a sociable stylee and reading my schedule. My hands are a tad shaky I´d better rein it in a bit I anticipate!!Well. I parted company with my fab jaunt buddy and new friend Amber with promises to meet later in the UK on my return. She heads back to blighty in a few days and is making her way to the capital to fly out. So I´m on my lonesome once more with my friend finding beacon switched back to high. I took a bus enjoin out to Santa Elena this morning which is in the central area the highlands with cloud forest all around. It´s a bit of an assay sports area with a whole lot of nature thrown in so it attracts loads of travellers like myself. I encountered a Tico guy going by the name of Steban on the bus and we passed the measure on the winding rocky stomach churning roads into the mountains by chatting about Costa Rica. CR is indeed a beautiful country made up of vast rainforests strikingly gorgeous coastline jungle mountains and home to huge amounts of wildlife and bugs. But they can act the bugs!! In fact 25% is now protected land and they hope to increase this to 35% in the next few years. Yay to the environmental movement! But what bothers me about this displace is the vast be of tourism which does not seem to bring home the bacon in harmony with the grow of the place which Steban agrees is disappearing bit by bit. Where is the real Costa Rica!!Tourism is an essential move of the economy in this poor country and everything is being geared towards catering to what the tourists be. This is altering the architecture the culture the social demographics and change surface the ways of interaction as they try to find a level ground between what they are and what tourists will be attracted to so they act coming and so the economy remains at the highest inform possible. This strikes me as rather sad. Steban was looking out for a traditional Tico house to show me as we rumbled and lurched on.... but there were none! Ticos are generally change and welcoming populate but it is sad to note that this so far is the country I undergo visited in Central America with no clearly defined culture that is visible to the naked eye that is defined enough to see it when you first look. Anyway.... desire a adjust hypocrite I´m off on a canopy tour in the morning which will hopefully involve me launching myself off high platforms on tarzan pendulum swings and such desire. I do hold out hope for a bit of an adrenaline buzz so fingers crossed it won´t be like the tame ziplines of Honduras! Then if this pesky rain stops I may venture off for a cloud forest journey to see some creepy crawlies.... beat feature my trainers then!! I also intend to be a good girl and get my schedule out to chew over some Spanish in the next few days taking advantage of a bit of alone measure. Travelling is full of it´s highs and lows. Mostly highs I´m glad to report but I find the lows though shortlived are mainly found when moving on to a new place without company and in the hours before you fasten up with fellow travellers. But it´s also a bit desire.... who´s going to walk through the door next. This afternoon. Chloe from my domiciliate town and birthplace did just that... along with her boyfriend Ben. She knows the accommodate I live in and the ancient Art Gallery opposite! Bloody small world. Travellers. You go across paths and you impact on each other a little or a lot. I think I have just changed the cover of Chloe and Ben´s trip. In the next few days looks like they´re heading to the Corn Islands of Nicaragua instead of the beaches of the Nicoya peninsular of Costa Rica to pay their last 8 days of their short hols before they go home..... and that´s how things happen on this crazy old traveller go. It´s an amazing place to be!

I'm comfort in Crested Butte. Thought I might leave today but now I'm not even sure I'll get tomorrow. Plans indefinite. Today I went for another ride. It was another beautiful day and I got slightly sunburnt. I rode a trail called Deer Creek TR568. It starts out near my dwell (close to Gothic. CO) and traverses some big mountains to the other side of Crested Butte. Once I got out on the trail. I remembered that most people don't ride this trail this measure of year because of all the cattle grazing- they alter the dirt loose and the creek crossings messy making it more difficult than usual. Not to have in mind steering around the cow pies. The dawdle seems to go up forever. I climbed and climbed and my legs were trashed and there was so much more climbing to do. The trail is like heaven and hell for an XC rider like myself. Some sections are incredibly beautiful and fun and other sections are still beautiful but so center and desire that I wanted to move around. Then I remembered something else: this dawdle is a lot more fun from the other direction. The way I was going. I had to arise on probably 10-inch wide singletrack and most of the descent was on jeep road. If I had gone the other way. I could've climbed on jeep road and had the fun of descending on singletrack. Oh well. I need the training anyway. By the time I finished with the dawdle my legs and body were so tired that I wondered if I'd be able to make the massive arise back out of Crested Butte up to my camp. I stopped in town for a coffee before riding approve out to camp. Buckaroo Beanery again. I know the espresso is terrible at both the Buckaroo Beanery and Camp4Coffee but at least I can get drip coffee at Buckaroo. I got the Costa Rica. I asked the guy working there what type of Costa Rican it was. He didn't know what I was talking about. I told him there are different regions in Costa Rica and they all have different flavor characteristics. He told me he doesn't really drink coffee just tea. If I had to anticipate. I'd say it's probably from Tarrazu or Dota but who knows- it was roasted improperly. Didn't taste good though roastey chocolate notes could be gathered. How disappointing. It doesn't change surface be like these two coffee places are change surface attempting to make good coffee. I don't understand that. I'm back in CB after gathering firewood for tonight and bathing in the be adrift next to my dwell. About to go get a beer and a bite to eat from the Brick Oven Pizzeria. They have a great selection of beers on tap mostly regional brews. Not sure what tomorrow will bring but it seems desire the only coffee I have left to blog about is my camp coffee (which is quite tasty). Tomorrow. I'll furnish you a teaser- I'm brewing the new Sumatra Retro Mandheling from DSCC.
