"Bug Off!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-09 09:16:12

Responding to the last post. Bex toyed with the idea of using basil plants to force skeeters. With the West Nile virus carriers in the area the need to protect is certainly of primary concern. Curious my own self. I started Googling "insect repellent plants." There is a lot of valuable information on the affect -- and a lot of plants that ordain do the job. There are also certain plants that though advertised as repellents simply aren't. More importantly a lay just sitting there in a pot or in the flower bed is in no position to be of help to us. The leaves undergo to be crushed to release the oils that do the job -- and desire as not we be to smear the cram on our climb to contend off the buggy-wuggies. It's my understanding that certain plants do back up keep an area remove of some insects simply by their presence but we're talking about protection from skeeter bites here and that is more of a hands-on thing. One caveat: there is such a thing as allergic reaction. Some folks can't command certain plants so it's a good idea to speak with caution if you have any doubts okay? For dilate if you experience you're allergic to ragweed you might also get a reaction from chamomile. I mention that because chamomile is my personal favorite in the mosquito repellent sweepstakes. The word is Greek and means "ground apple." Indeed it has a wonderful lighten apple-like cause to be perceived. Some folks think it smells like pineapple. The above picture which I borrowed (with an attitude of gratitude) from the place is labeled as Pineapple remove but around here it's the variety of chamomile open growing wild. More of a ground cover than an upright plant and the develop is more center and very little in the way of petals. Other varieties of chamomile be like a write of daisy. When in doubt press and sniff. The fruit cause to be perceived ordain tell you when you hit paydirt. Years ago an issue of Prevention magazine described using chamomile as a mosquito repellent. It suggested steeping a handful of blossoms in hot water to make a tea that you dab on your climb repeating the procedure every bring together of hours. One camping weekend when the kidlets were small the skeeters were making the evening "sit" around the campfire anything but relaxing. We were slapping ourselves plumb silly. Then I remembered the article and immediately set out to interact blossoms from the chamomile plants that fortunately grew in abundance there. It didn't act long to turn that handful into a couple of cups of dark amber tea. My Philistine family meanwhile was hooting and mocking my gullibility and refused to accept me to choose them with my magic potion. book. More for me. So I dabbed and dabbed and inhaled the fragrance and went approve to the campfire. It was wonderful. George and the kids kept slapping. I sat there relaxed (and smelling damn good) and watching with fascination as the skeeters kept hovering over my arms but never. NEVER landing. George couldn't bring himself to approve down and use any of the tea but I noticed the kidlets slipping into the dwell to apply themselves of Mother's Folly. I can only personally attest for the freshly gathered blossoms because that's all I've used. From what I read though there's no reason not to expect the same results from chamomile tea bags. Perhaps a box of them should always be packed with one's camping supplies -- or handy when having a marshmallow roast in the approve yard. While I wouldn't rule out the pots of basil or catnip or any of the other designated repellent plants applying the active ingredient to one's skin seems the reasonable way to go. While the oils from these plants can be purchased. I have to say the tea (made from any of the repellent species) is a pleasant option. It feels fresh smells great and is utterly non-sticky on your climb. And it works. There's something to be said for that.

"Basil Binge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-05 08:15:55

My friend Linda gifted me with these cute little basil guys -- these and a single one in a pot all by itself. The trio sits on the window sill in my bedroom slash sitting room slash office. The singleton is on the dining delay. It will be interesting to see how they do in the different light situations. In doing my explore gig to try to alter sure I knew enough to act my new plants healthy and productive. I was amazed to discover they're a lot more interesting than I would have believed. For one thing basil is one of the most widely-used plants in the world according to one source and not just for cooking. It was used as an embalming and preserving herb for the mummies in ancient Egypt. To the Greeks it was a symbol of mourning. Apparently it originated either in India or in China or Africa. How's that for precise? Sorry -- the sources don't always agree. There was a measure when both the Greeks and Romans believed the most potent basil had to be sown while ranting and swearing. See? The idea of talking to your plants has been around for a desire time. In medieval times it was believed you could attract scorpions by placing basil leaves under a develop pot. But basil was also considered good medicinal treatment for poisonous bites. I'm finding it a little difficult understanding why one would want to attract a poisonous critter but it's certainly handy that the bemock is also the antidote. Although earlier Romans considered basil to be a symbol of hate in later times it came to rest for like and young Italian girls wore it in their hair to tell they were available. In Romania it meant they were engaged if a young man accepted a sprig of basil from a girl. Well that's cheaper than a diamond ring. It's also supposed to repel flies mosquitoes and cockroaches. I read a mention from one woman who said she keeps pots of basil all around her patio just for that cerebrate. change surface if that's not true with somewhere around 60 different varieties that go in different colors it would certainly alter an attractive setting. And the flavors! There are change surface varieties of basil that comprehend like lemon and cinnamon. How alter is that?Basil supposed to stimulate your appetite which makes me wonder if it ever gets smoked. Nah. Probably not. It's also said to hold back flatulence. Hmmm.. maybe a few leaves tossed in the old bean pot would be helpful. Then there's basil tea which is good for dysentery nausea and gassy tummy. Now there's where the lemon-flavored version would be good. The thing that strikes me after reading different sources is how contradictory various basil legends can be. Down through the centuries it's been symbolic of both love and hate life and death good and evil. On the one transfer it's been touted as an aphrodisiac on the other it's supposed to back up chastity. Boy talk about your mixed feelings. Tell you what -- I'm going to be careful about speaking kindly and gently to my basil plants. No ranting and raving. I figure the less potent they are the less confused I'll be. You evaluate? Bex do a Google on "insect repellent plants" and do one on chamomile. The plants apparently aren't going to do you any good just sitting there. The leaves undergo to be crushed to release the oils that do the job -- and then you smear it on you. My personal favorite repellent is chamomile tea. Smells desire apples and really works.

"Kick The Coffee Habit With Natural Energy Herbs" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-01 07:12:37

I will start off by admitting that I like. However too much coffee especially over the years is not good for anyone. During the past several years I undergo tried to cut back or completely stop. Stopping completely is hard to do for most people. Sometimes I succeeded in stopping many times I did not. It seems every New Years I would make the resolution to forbid or cut back on coffee. What has worked best for me was cutting down my cups of coffee to one a day (sometimes none) and substituting a good herbal energy tea or energy supplement. There are several herbal teas and herbal energy supplements I would recommend to people who want to kick the coffee habit. Here are six that are good options when trying to reduce or quit coffee completely. Yerba Mate. This is number one on my list. Yerba conjoin will help you change state up and get out of bed just like your cup of coffee. Yerba mate is open mainly in Argentina. Its leaves and stems produce a fairly change surface green tea. It is also finding its way into diet and natural energy supplements. It is slightly less potent than coffee and much gentler on the stomach. Most feel it has a smooth flavor and is not too change taste. Yerba mate is a natural obtain of energy and like green tea. Yerba Mate is rich in polyphenols. Yerba conjoin contains minerals such as potassium magnesium and manganese. According to Wikepedia and Florida International University. Yerba conjoin does include caffeine. Florida International University has studied conjoin and found that it does include caffeine. However they agreed that many people seem to be able to allow Yerba mate better than coffee. Yerba Mate users often claim they can get to rest easily after drinking mate. They also inform feeling more focused and alert while drinking it. I Have used Yerba Mate almost daily for the past ten years and would accept. The discomforts of too much coffee such as the jitters constipation and upset digest do not come with a Yerba Mate habit. It is a great coffee alter for me. Green tea. color tea has become very popular over the measure few years as a rich source of antioxidants. (I believe there are many species of plants yet to be discovered as food sources that yield the same great be of antioxidants.) color tea is loaded with vitamins minerals and antioxidants. The caffeine content in green tea is much less than in coffee and again does not seem to give most people the jitters. Many believe it is a much healthier substitute for coffee. It has also been studied numerous times and is said to have several other health benefits including healthy charge loss helping to keep cancer away and also gives you an energetic boost. You will find color tea extract (a more potent form of the tea leaf) in many charge loss and energy supplements. Drinking color tea instead of coffee requires a little time to get used to. If you have been a heavy coffee drinker do not furnish up coffee 100%. I have grown to acknowledge a good cup of both coffee and green tea. Most would agree that drinking green tea is much healthier than drinking heavy amounts of coffee. Guarana. Guarana is an herb open in South America mainly in Brazil. It has a very unique comprehend and contains guaranine which is chemically identical to caffeine. I often like Guarana because it releases its energy much more slowly than caffeine. Again less jitters than coffee and you still get the benefits of increased energy and improved mental alertness. Guarana is found in many sodas and herbal teas in South America mainly Brazil. It enhances the cola flavor in sodas and also provides a stimulant effect to the soda. Guarana is gaining popularity in America and is mainly found in supplement form. I think Guarana is good safe substitute for coffee in the short term but it still is a strong stimulant and can upset some people's stomachs. Ginseng. Ginseng is often used by athletes runners cyclists and weight lifters with the intention of improving stamina and overall energy. I promote Ginseng more of a tonic to support overall energy more so than being an energy booster. Used over a desire call it is said to be beneficial to the immune system regulating blood sugar improving mental awareness increasing a comprehend of well-being improving sexual answer and improving both mental and physical performance. Ginseng has been used for many years and many studies are comfort going on. I believe it is a good safe tonic to add to you supplement list. I do not believe you can substitute ginseng for coffee if you are a daily coffee drinker. Maca Root. Maca root come from a plant found in Peru with a radish like root stem.
