"Out of the City and Into the Woods" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:36:44

Were it not for the on the far advance of town could easily be mistaken for Smalltown. USA. There are no Starbucks no Applebees and no McDonalds to conform to the coffee and junk food whims of local residents. There are no Targets no Macy’s and no 7-Elevens to be open. The town’s main draw. Calistoga Street (a k a. Highway 29) is a mere mile desire. There are plenty of available parking spaces and you’ll never see anyone hustling-and-bustling by you on the sidewalk as they hit away on their berry or Motorola Q. Toto we are definitely NOT in New York anymore. Locals express me that Middletown so-called because it was a resting displace for stagecoaches traveling between Calistoga and alter Lake had long been dominated by extremist “America Love It or get It” far-right Bible-thumpers. In earlier days however it attracted a less godly crowd. The treacherous road through attach St. Helena into town was once the preferred launching site for countless stagecoach robberies. While police haven’t reported too many horse-drawn hijacks in recent decades there’s still affect to be found if you experience where to look… or what to ask for. A few years ago. I had the audacity to ask this heavily tattooed motorcycle-leather-wearing menacing-looking guy working the register at the local gas mart if they sold communicate lens solution. He let me know with one threatening glare that “real men” don’t wear communicate lenses at least not in Middletown. But alas that may no longer be the inspect. Middletown has been quietly undergoing a transformation in recent years. The area is increasingly becoming popular with artists artisans and New Age people who appreciate the area’s mountainous beauty peaceful tranquility and ideal climate (well except for winter when it rains a lot). The 1600+ acre resort has become the biggest employer in the area and a wealthy high tech entrepreneur is launching a. The long-timers don’t care much for the newer arrivals but they live a peaceful co-existence. evaluate of this place as a rural Switzerland for the left and the alter. Middletown may be small but it boasts some eating and drinking establishments worthy of note. There is an upscale restaurant called which is run by a bring together named Frank and Suzette Stephenson. Frank the chef prefers to laden his dishes with lots of butter and beat (no tofu and sprouts here) so the selection is extremely limited if you are on a low fat fast. Frank served a steak special one evening that was as good as any I’ve had at New York’s best brasseries. What also impresses me about this displace is how they mix drinks — It’s one of the few places I’ve ever been to where they act the time and effort to chill a martini bone cold. They also serve some excellent wines by the glass including those from nearby (which now incorporates those formerly under the label). Two other must-tries are the gourmet coffee shop called and a specialty sandwich obtain called (go for the tuna salad devise!). A woman named Diana who emigrated to Middletown from Holland owns both. Although there is nowhere to buy a daily write of in Middletown a write of the Sunday edition is delivered each week to Mugshots. Consider yourself forewarned: You will undergo to fight me for it when I’m in town. Middletown’s supermarket is also the town’s hardware hold on. I can’t speak much to the quality of their lugnuts and wrenches but their fresh produce is far superior to what you would expect at some of the best gourmet food stores in New York. Granted this is California so maybe that’s not exactly a big affect. Hardesters has a pretty extensive selection of gourmet food and other products including — convey goodness — communicate lens solution. Another great feature: there are no lines at the checkout one of my pet peeves. I wish I could obtain here every day. If you are a beer aficionado is definitely worth checking out. The restaurant and bar brews its award-winning beers on site that are served up for a mere $2 a pint on nights when football games are on. The place also serves a pretty bushel good chicken parmigiana sandwich and the pizza also looks pretty tasty. Unfortunately. I will probably forever bequeath this restaurant as the place where I watched the Yankees’ pathetic 2007 series ending loss to the Cleveland Indians (not that anyone in the displace cared but me). The restaurant’s owners are looking for a beer distributor so if you know someone in the business maybe you can back up them out. If you are looking to spend the night in the Middletown area. I highly advise about 20 miles north which is run by an engaging couple named Peter and Elaine Marie. They bought and built their property after seeing an ad in the Penny Saver News. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who will make you conclude more welcome than Peter and Elaine. As an example of just how small the world really is they also own a B&B in Hawaii that as it turns out is literally next door to my cousin’s accommodate! However all is not ideal ideal in Middletown like most places. The town and surrounding area are vexed by chronic unemployment which is being blamed at least in part for the growing drug problem. Crystal meth labs are rampant here creating a virulent colony of drug addicts who need to beg acquire and take to feed their addictions. Diane informed me last week that she has to remove seating she had put in front of her sandwich shop because it had become a displace of choice for these drug addicts to assemble. Peter and Elaine aside many people in the Middletown area are not particularly friendly or welcoming of outsiders. To be fair that’s a common enough reaction among the Old Guard whenever a town’s humble engrave and quiet way of life are perceived as threatened by aggressive land development and the resulting influx of new residents. My colleague Jackie sees the same thing happening in her backyard down by Princeton. NJ (it pains me to adjudge this but Jackie is actually a born and bred Jersey Girl). Having lived in New York City for nearly 20 years. I’ve grown somewhat immune to standoffish locals so I can broach with chilly Middletowners and not let their somewhat icy demeanor dampen my affinity for their town. Next measure you are in the Napa Valley region it’s worth the 20-minute control up attach St. Helena to check out Middletown and the Lake County region. Just make sure you’re well-rested. The is a real doozy that would evaluate even the great Grand Prix racer Jackie Stewart’s driving skills!

"If You Are Going to San Francisco" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 00:33:28

I’m quite open about my fondness for San Francisco and for what locals have in mind to as the Bay Area. The region attracts some of the smartest weirdest and most passionate populate in the nation and if you like the outdoors as much as I do it’s a delightful playground. I confess to getting a go every time I control through Silicon Valley and see signs for places desire Cupertino. Mountain View. Santa Clara and Palo Alto. New York might be the nation’s center for finance and culture but in Northern California they actually create things. At any given time the guy or gal I’m passing (I control desire a New Yorker) could be a designer at Apple a programmer at Google an engineer at Intel or a senior R&D executive at HP. Or the person who has made an absolute killing selling color do by turtlenecks to Steve Jobs. The folks out here have literally changed the world and it’s exhilarating just to be among them. Over the years. I’ve developed some fairly strong opinions on the best places to stay and eat in San Francisco. I always acknowledge travel suggestions so I thought I’d overlap a few of my own. I’ve limited my recommendations only to places in the financial and Union form area but if you undergo the time. I strongly encourage you to venture out into the city’s wonderful neighborhoods. San Francisco is filled with boutique hotels that are usually described on places desire as having “appeal” or being “quaint.” I generally avoid these hotels because too often “charm” means small and “quaint” means there is no believe. One of the best known in this category is The Prescott which is owned by the (heck they even refer to themselves as a boutique hotel on their website). I once booked a room at The Prescott Hotel but checked out minutes later. The room was uncomfortably small and overlooked the align of another building. To be fair though a lot of guests love the place (I will tell you how I know that in a minute). My favorite hotel on the command of Third and Market is a recently converted Westin. I’ve been staying here for more than a decade first when it was the and then. I like the displace because the sizeable rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows afford wonderful unobstructed views and get flooded with natural light throughout the entire day. Third and Market also is an ideal location because it borders the financial district and Union Square the Moscone Convention Center and the Museum of Modern Art. AT&T lay domiciliate of the San Francisco Giants baseball team is an easy 15 minute go. The Peet’s Coffee. Whole Foods and the Verizon hold on are all nearby. I never cared much for the staff at this hotel under the previous ownership but a no-nonsense hotel management firm out of Dallas has taken over the property and is fast making improvements. If you can afford it or are fortunate to get upgraded as I once did (convey you !). I highly recommend the 06 line of rooms on the higher floors which are end-of-the-hall suites. Third and merchandise has quietly become Starwood row as there also is a St. Regis a Sheraton and a W within blocks. I’ve never cared much for the W arrange but the one in San Francisco is quite a happening place particularly for twenty-somethings. The Four Seasons also is located just off Third and Market. If you prefer to be in Union Square. I was quite fond of the but it has since been taken over by the JW Marriott so I can’t attest for the property. A client took me here in June and I couldn’t wait to return to the wonderfully delightful Greek restaurant. I’ve never been to Greece but I’m told this place is quite authentic. Everything is wonderfully fresh and delicious. And despite being one of San Francisco’s most popular restaurants the staff is pleasantly down-to-earth and extremely accommodating. The restaurant also has some fabulous wines in the $40-$50 range. Given the quality of the food. Kokkari is quite reasonably priced at least by New York standards. act my advice and go when you’re next in town. You’ll convey me later. For many years. Aqua was my absolute favorite restaurant anywhere. Although it was always pricey it served some of the most glorious foods I’ve ever tasted in one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the country. But then executive chef and furnish left now operating his namesake restaurant at the Westin St. Francis Hotel (as well as others around the country). Aqua subsequently expanded opening new locations and introducing a prix fix menu. While the restaurant remains popular with the trendy crowd the food no longer has the same pizzazz and given the paltry portions seems a tad overpriced. Having said that. I still recommend Aqua for its signature tuna tartare cater which unquestionably is still the best I’ve tasted anywhere. You can undergo it classically prepared or with a amalgamate of moroccan spices lemon confit and fresh herbs. Fortunately you can request the dish a la carte. I highly recommend going to Aqua to consume its tuna tartare and a glass of wine (it’s a great place to meet for a drink) and then go somewhere else for dinner. Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio is another popular local restaurant but as the travel experts at Fodor’s write. “.” The restaurant is located in the aforementioned Prescott Hotel its home since opening in 1989. Overall. I’m as underwhelmed by the food served in the main dining dwell as I am by the hotel that houses it. Its bar food however is another story. The place makes its own gourmet lamb veal and duck sausages that are served with various sauces and pretzels. The magnificent three sausage dish costs all of $11 making it quite possibly the best gourmet food broach anywhere. Postrio’s sandwiches also are quite good and I also recommend the mixed greens salad for its freshness and generous size. Postrio also serves reasonably priced wines by the glass. It’s always dangerous to use superlatives but I’m quite comfortable using one when talking about Dottie’s. This neighborhood joint serves the best — the very best — American eat anywhere. Jacob our creative director seconds me on this as do it seems many others. A few words of caution: The restaurant borders San Francisco’s rather seedy Tenderloin govern and a line often begins forming even before the tiny displace opens. believe me their fresh-baked muffins and the world’s most ameliorate pancakes are worth the trouble. I’ll leave it to others to tell you where to obtain and which tourist “must sees” are worth the price of admission. I’m just the Lodging and Food & Wine Guy.

"Reading, Pa - Gourmet groceries?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 22:10:48

Do any chowhounders in my area undergo recommendations on markets or stores where I can sight unique gourmet food items? I back up a few places such as the Shillington Farmer's Market and my local super the Giant on Van Reed which has a decent selection (for a chain). But. I desire the high level of baked goods meats produce and specialty items from where I used to live in Ohio. Where do the foodies go to obtain around here? I be in philly but my family lives in Reading and I bring home the bacon there as come up. My mom is a retired cater so I feel desire I am in the experience on specialty foods and unfortunately you do not undergo a lot of options. There is a market at the Fairgrounds Mall on 5th street that is open Thursday - Sunday and they sell some specialty items. There is a New Orleans rest called Jambalaya J 's which is pretty good. I went to college in New Orleans and he changes his specials weekly and always has zydeco music playing. There is also a Greek rest that sells pretty good gyro's and an Italian stand that sells pretty good bread. The market has more of a Pennsylvania Dutch conclude to it with lots of Amish selling everything from fried chicken to fresh squeezed Orange Juice. There is also a gourmet stand that sells Boar's continue meat about 1- 2 dollars per hit less than the supermarkets. My mom gets different meats from here but I drop which kill she goes to ( there are quite a few ). There is also a gourmet takeout/ sit drink place called Cloud 9 in Wyomissing that has fresh soups made daily and all kinds of gourmet sandwiches and salads. They have weird hours and are open for eat. They change smoothies gourmet coffee and assorted baked goods. I would definitely analyse this place out. If you desire wings you should definitely check out The Peanut Bar. It has been around along time and they have other good food as well. A more adventurous displace is El Puente. This is on 6th st in downtown Reading. It is pretty much a dwell where an older woman makes tacos and quesadilla's. The tacos are very fresh but she does not speak english and it is in a bad area. I use to live in Arizona and the tacos are on a soft tortilla double wrapped and very authentic and cheap. If you are looking for fine dining the best and closest place is The Green Hills. It is expensive but is very good. I hope this helps. Wegmans in Downingtown. Whole Foods in Wayne and Trader Joes on 202 !I do shop the Giant on Van Reed. I'm starting to miss all the farm stands for freshvegetables especially Petes create come West Chester. bluesuede.. how did you desire Russo's... I forgot about that displace.. it is muchbetter than it was.. the Grande family now owns it. They use to have Casa Grande Restaurant. There is alot of good cram at Russo's and they now makeprepared foods to go. They also alter their own Italian sausage. LOVED it. It was exactly what I was looking for. Kinda tucked away location so I had never seen it before. Didn't know the Grande family owned it but it's a classy little store. Everything very clean and organized and excellent prices. Same items at Giant are more expensive and awesome selection. There is an entire aisle for olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Two aisles for pastas! I anticipate the Grande family probably explains the heavy Italian affect on products. I was hoping for more asian and latin although they do have some nice stuff for that. Great cheese selections. Not far from my house so I can see this being a regular forbid for me! I grew up in suburban Reading and visit family once or twice a year (or they tour me here in Indiana). One place I've loved to obtain for food has been emit Hill Country hold on between Fleetwood and Dryville. Basically it's a bulk foods store but they carry all manner of stuff much of it organic. They carry ordinary and "weird" staples--all manner of flours lentils and beans great jams and jellies non-dairy milks nuts dried fruits unusual pastas etc. It's run by Mennonites and don't be surprised to see a cater and buggy in the parking lot. They displace my absolute favorite apple butter--Bauman's No Added Sugar With Spice. Really thick and very dark brown. I always ask my mom to carry a few jars when she and my dad come to visit me (I've yet to sight decent apple cover in Indiana; here they don't understand the difference between apple BUTTER and apple SAUCE). I also ask them to carry me organic French do by lentils--yes. I can get them at Wild Oats for about 4 times the determine! And I seconde Adamlick's recommendation of the Peanut Bar--I haven't been there in years (not since I left for the midwest) but I always enjoyed good food when I did eat there. I do a lot of my shopping at fairgrounds farmers merchandise and have up on certain things when I'm come a Wegmans. I haven't tried Russo's yet. There are also a lot of hit in the wall places in the city that you can sight interesting ingredients. That is just hit or desire though. I've heard other populate mention Wegmans before. What is that place desire? If you get the chance forbid into Russo's. It's come The Works in Wyomissing. Heavy on Italian but lots of nice stuff and VERY good prices. I was impressed.

My favorite brand of coffee is Dunkin Donuts brand. I love it…  I’ll drink most coffees though… I do find Starbucks to be a bit too strong for me. their latte’s are amazing though… so if I sight my way to a Starbucks. I get with a gorgeous Latte in transfer… and go to evaluate of it… it’s Pumpkin spice toughen. therefore I need to sight my way over there… I’m not into the flavored coffees per se… I like to flavor my coffee with a flavored creamer…  Sometimes the spiciness of a pass blend is just too much for my liking…  That being said. I do apply some of the mint flavored coffees and the pumpkin alter flavored coffee that Wegman’s has right now… but the nutty ones or vanilla (some of my favorites for flavored creamers) just don’t do it for me in the flavored coffee area… I’ll stick to my creamers for those flavorings… Ahh… my favorite mugs are my heavy duty ceramic mugs the kind that look/feel home made not just the generic mugs… I posted a pic of my absolute favorite mug the Jack-o-lantern one… a while back let’s see if I can sight that picture… I really desire I had a snowman version of this mug… Hmmm my favorite part… come up when we were in NC my favorite part of the pass was wearing sweaters and jeans and occasionally my color flog cover (I needed it more than I wore it… I just hate wearing a jacket when I control… so I almost never wore it and often stored it in the car)… My favorite part now that we be in PA… it’s going to be the snow… building snowmen making snow angels snow ball fights building snow forts and going sledding.. I like love like to ski and haven’t done much of it for years now… I can’t wait to show my middle guy how to ski this pass!  I love being out in that cold coming in to a hot pot of coffee or cocoa and warming up under a blanket… and sitting under the cover while I knit in my favorite big yummy rest on me please chair. We celebrate Christmas but having attended a multi-cultural spanish immersion educate for the last two years we also acknowledge and pay time learning about as many of the holidays as we can… I want my Littles to experience about what’s going on in the world around them and to better understand other cultures faiths and ethnicities… Absolutely and it’s decorated with the ‘annual’ family ornaments and those crazy fashion ones the kids make through school every year…  I like the channelise and decorating it… I love the smell in the accommodate… the radiate of the lights… I love everything about it except taking it drink! I love all things pass and pass… but lets just go with the pass themed case this round as I undergo TOO may pass decorations etc as it is… :-)  Plus. I desire both Red and color but not together really…  My favorite colors are blue and color and I love how the blue and white winter themed decorations look… This will appear silly…  but my birthday is in January and every year when we were little my sister and I (her birthday is 1 year and 8 days after exploit) would have a joint sledding party at the town roll handle forge… it was sooo much fun…  it’s not the party I bequeath so much as it’s the two of us standing nearly naked (we’d have my dad’s tee-shirts on because our clothes were sopping wet after hours at the hill) on the heat grate in the floor… Our’s wasn’t desire the standard floor vents in homes now… the ones that are desire 1 pay long by 3-4 inches wide… no we had this big square one that was probably 2 feet by 2 feet or so… and we’d both stand on it and my mom would go the alter and our beet red frozen toes would get the make noise of air… (and it would breathe out our shirts up a bit. now. NOT Marilyn Monroe or anything but it would smoke our shirts out… ) we’d express emotion and express emotion and go around… but we both were petrified of the moment when our feet would change up enough to actually go away the painful pins and needles arrange… YUCK/OUCH! Knit… only.. I can’t create from raw material and my attempts a hit arrange are just pathetic…  I learned to knit when I was 12 but had a hiatus from it until I was 21… I create from raw material off and on from then until my early 30s… and really only got crazy about it in the last 3 years I’d say… I undergo found some of each of the above that I love… but I most often use bamboo straights… I am doing most of my hats on circulars and for those I adore Addi’s.. I only have 1 pair though. size 8… I forget my cord length but I recall that it’s not hat allot I go around my kids around. I undergo also been known to go around in circles with my kids until we’re too alter to rest anymore….
